Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8th, 2021 marks International Women’s day. A day that globally commemorates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

As a business in aviation (an industry that’s predominantly male), we’re excited to share that 24% of our employees are women. Although there are many more strides to become a gender equal industry, we’re proud of the women who’ve contributed a total of 96 years to New United Goderich.

Take a look at the accomplishments, challenges and advice our female employees face within the aviation industry below:

Emma, AME Apprentice

1. What is your role here at New United Goderich?

I’m an Aircraft Maintenance Apprentice with cross-training in other departments. Sometimes I help the Avionics, Interior and Paint teams.

2. Why did you choose/what inspired you to work in aviation?

I’ve always loved fixing things and solving problems. I also always thought airplanes were really cool. Aircraft Maintenance was the perfect fit for me.

3. In your opinion, why is it important that more women take up aviation in the near future?

I think it’s more important women take up aviation because the more balance there is between genders, the less discouraged women will feel about wanting to take up aviation in the first place. Some of the women I knew in school told me they were hesitant about starting in aviation because they felt outnumbered. I don’t think your decision about your career should be affected by something like that.

4. What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career in aviation?

Honestly, I would say don’t overthink the fact that women are a minority in this industry. Work hard and be yourself and I think you’ll find that you won’t have to worry about being outnumbered. Be confident in yourself and be the best you can be.

5. On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Find something that you love and find a way to make it into a career, no matter what it is, no matter what the stereotypes or “norms” are. Just go for it.

Jenn, Sales Department Manager

2. Why did you choose/what inspired you to work in aviation?

I started my aviation career at Diamond Aircraft.  It amazed me how aircraft were built and I immediately took interest in aviation.  When I came to New United Goderich and saw how we transform these aircraft and the reactions on our customers faces; I knew this was the right career for me.  It is very rewarding.

3. In your opinion, why is it important that more women take up aviation in the near future?

I think more women should look at careers in aviation.  It has been known to be a male dominant industry.  More and more women are becoming Pilots, AME’s, etc.  It is great to see.  Congrats to all of the strong women out there making their dreams come true.  Aviation can be a very rewarding industry both personally and professionally.  In my career, I have met some amazing people.

4. What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career in aviation?

If you are considering a career in aviation look at all options that are available. Dependent on where your specialty or interests are will determine where you will end up. Looking at the present situation; if you are young and willing to invest some time, look at the possibility of becoming a pilot.  More and more women are becoming pilots in aviation and this is great to see.

5. On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Follow your dreams.  If you are determined enough; put your mind to whatever you want and believe in and make it happen!

Laura, Aircraft Painter

1. What is your role here at New United Goderich?

I do a bit of everything. I currently am an Aircraft Painter where I prep, mask, clean, sand and make the planes look stunning.

2. Why did you choose/what inspired you to work in aviation?

I was looking for a job and a former employee recruited me. Here we are 16 years later!

3. In your opinion, why is it important that more women take up aviation in the near future?

I think it’s important because we can do anything men can do. Aviation is an exciting career path because there’s always things to learn and it’s a career people don’t really think about as an option.

4. What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career in aviation?

Don’t let the airplanes or anyone intimidate you. It can be very overwhelming at times, but anything new or unfamiliar is scary at first right?

5. On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

We’re amazing and strong! Don’t let a job intimidate you.

Cynthia, Production Administrative Assistant

1. What is your role here at New United Goderich?

I’m the Production Administrative Assistant. My role is to provide various clerical support to Production Management and the Production Department, as well as assisting other administrative departments as needed.

2. Why did you choose/what inspired you to work in aviation?

I was raised around aviation. My dad is an aircraft enthusiast, hobbyist, and inventor. It was perfectly acceptable growing up to assume that while walking through my house I would be stepping directly in the path of a paper airplane test model in-flight. My dad belonged to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), through which he arranged my very first “Young Eagle” flight wherein I was able to “co-pilot” a small craft and share in my dad’s passion. He certainly inspired me in my decision to build a career here.

3. In your opinion, why is it important that more women take up aviation in the near future?

The women that came before us to bring about equality and positive change have opened many doors for us, aviation is a growing and ever-changing industry which can greatly benefit from the innovativeness, creativity, and collaborative approach that women take in the professional world.  We all are greater than the sum of our parts, and a thriving industry contains both male and female contributors.

4. What is the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career in aviation?

There are plenty of career opportunities available to you in Aviation. At New United Goderich, for example, we have several women in our workforce who hold various administrative roles ranging from upper management to project planning, as well several women who work on our shop floor in an aviation trade such as aircraft maintenance, avionics, and paint. There is a place here in aviation for whatever skillsets you may have.

5. On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Trust yourself. Imposter syndrome can be a very real thing. Remember that your skills and abilities are important, and your contributions to the work force matter more than you realize.
